Dutch microwave Beacons now QRT

After many years of PA0EHG's superb beacon service from Holland, we have to sadly announce that these most useful beacons have had to be removed from their location at Schipol Airport. The UK Microwave Group tried to he;lp retain the beacons by wirint to the relevant Dutch Authorities. Please visit PA0EHG's website more more of the sad details. If you can help relocate thiese beacons within a realistic travelling distance for Hans, then please contact him by email. Here's his email giving the bad news...

With much regret I must inform you that all the microwave beacons(1.2Ghz up to 47GHz)are now off . I did show your (UKuG) letter to the management but it did not help. With help of some colleague amateurs I am trying to find a new location and get the beacons on air again. Thanks very much for your help and support.
Today has been a very bad day for me.

LA4SHF 10GHz beacon update

From:JAN LUSTRUP, LA3EQ <lustrup@start.no>
3 Aug 2005

I have recived today the beacon from DB6NT and it is now being tested at JO28UX.
I am still waiting for the 1 Watt PA to arrive.
The final QTH is JO28UO and this is 150m over sea level, and a seapath to UK, OZ, PA, F and DL.
ERP is approx 50 watt, transmitting at a 2 directions:
1: s.w. with homemade 13 dB horn, very low el. / but wide az. angle.
2: North with high gain 17dB horn.
Keying is by a WW2R module with fsk shift of 10kHz.
I will get back with more info when the beacon is in normal operation.

GB3ZME 5.7GHz beacon now back on with more ERP

From: Martyn, G3UKV

Subject: GB3ZME beacon 5.7GHz QRV

Hello Microwavers...

GB3ZME beacon on 5760.910MHz now back on after 2 month break.

The PA is now 15 watts, fed to 8+8 slotted waveguide via 25' of LDF550.

We are trying a different approach to crystal stability, based around DB6NT's current temperature control module. I wish he made a 60 deg version available! The 40 deg standard can well be exceeded on a hot summer's day in a stuffy loft area, where two of the 'ZME microwave beacons reside.

As I can't monitor this one at home, would appreciate reports, for both normal "flat conditions" and enhanced propagation. (email me at: ukv@ukv.me.uk)

Acknowledgements to Telford Electronics who donated the Andrew's coax.

Note: All three GB3ZME beacons are now fully operational, viz:-

3400.910MHz (HF in warm weather) 15 watts, Ionica antenna, 120degrees beamwidth, centred approx. SE.
5760.910MHz 15 watts, 8/8 slot. Omni
24048.910MHz 1 watt, omni 40 slot. Omni. It may drift many kHz HF on warm days!

All sponsored by the Telford & DARS.

GB3FRS FARNBOROUGH 23cm BEACON

The 23cm Farnborough beacon GB3FRS 1296.850 from IO91PH is currently off the air. The beacon is owned by the Farnborough Radio Society of which I'm a member and the beacon keeper was/is Mike G8ATK who has the TX & antenna at his home. I understand the company near the airfield where the beacon was based either moved or closed down.

The Farnham repeater is just a few miles away in IO91OF on 1297.050MHz operates in beacon mode (vertical polarisation) when not in use as a repeater- which is everytime I have listened to it! http://www.avsi.co.uk/fvhfg/gb3fm.htm

24GHz beacon from Schiphol

From: Hans v Alphen [pa0ehg@amsat.org]
Sent: 01 March 2004

This is to inform you that the 24GHz beacon at Schiphol is now again QRV and on the of 24048.200 MHz.

Power output is 150 mW into a 24cm dish beamed to G3LQR and 800mW into an omni antenna. Both outputs have the same frequency.

Further info, including pictures, is published on my website .

The beacon is in fact almost completely new, with an OCXO designed by G8ACE and further a new multiplier from 12 to 24 GHz giving 150 mW. Then a directional coupler of 20 dB followed by a amplifier with 800 mW.

I would welcome any RX reports.

47GHz beacon operational from Bell Hill

From: Talbot Andrew [ACTALBOT@mail.dstl.gov.uk]
Sent: 23 February 2004

On Thursday 19 February 2004, a 47GHz personal beacon running the callsign G8BKE/P began operating from the site of the GB3SC# complex on Bell Hill in Dorset, IO80UU59.

It is a self contained beacon constructed by G8ACE, generating around 10mW of RF to a 20dB horn, the whole unit being built into a sealed box mounted at the top of the beacon mast. The frequency source is derived from a stable locked oscillator and should remain accurate to within a few hundred Hz of its nominal operating frequency of 47088.905 MHz. The antenna is pointed on a bearing of around 80 degrees from the site - it is targetted at G8ACE's Winchester QTH and surrounding high spots such as Cheesefoot Head, at 75km. Antenna beamwidth is in the region of 20 degrees

Chris G8BKE has access to the secure remote control link for the complex to comply with turn off requirements.

This brings the total of beacons operating from Bell Hill to seven. Apart from the five forming the GB3SC# complex, a low power personal beacon signing G4JNT/P on 70.031MHz has been running for 18 months and now G8BKE/P.
Is this a record ? There is now room for only one more unit before the
remote turn off capacity is saturated.

GB3SC# series beacons: November 2003 update

From: Andy talbot [G4JNT@THERSGB.NET]
Sent: 07 November 2003

The two highest frequency beacons of the South Coast microwave beacon complex, GB3SCX on 10GHz and GB3SCK on 24GHz, are now operational again after a major rebuild of both units.

Both have had their output power increased, raising them by at least 10dB over their previous nominal values. GB3SCK has retuned to transmit on 24048.905MHz in order to comply with the new 24GHz bandplan which will come into force at the beginning of 2004.

GB3SCC on 5760.905MHz has had its keying duty cycle adjusted - it now transmits callsign and location details, followed by plain carrier for a total of 45 seconds, then stops transmitting for 15 seconds to assist
thermal management. This keying sequence will be maintained over the
winter period and will be reviewed when warmer weather returns in the spring

As an precautionary measure, the beacon complex will remain operating with its mast at reduced height for a while, until the continued reliable
operation of the rebuilt units is assured. This reduced height should only
affect propagation in a north west / south east direction due to slight shading from local trees.

Reception reports should be sent to John Fell, G0API QTHR.

Amateur microwaves are still going strong in spite of RSGB's attempt to stifle all representation of our use of frequencies above 1.3GHz , with their abolition of the Microwave Committee.

NEWS FROM MURRAY, G6JYB ON THE GB3CMS 10GHz BEACON

November 2003

Your web page entry for the Essex 10GHz Beacon is currently:
10368.896 GB3CMS JO01HR 25w ERP slot OMNI 07/97 QRV

If only it were 25W!

It is, and always has been 30mW source power into a
10dB Omni slotted waveguide-16 antenna
since it was re-sited in July 1997

It's located at the qth of G1EUC, just down the road on
Danbury Hill from G4EAT that great DXer

An application to raise its height and power made in May 1999
was blocked by the primary user (esp because we are inside
the Charing Cross radius). We did not press this too hard lest we get an order to shutdown altogether!

Details and photos are on the Essex Repeater Group website www.essexrepeatergroup.org.uk

Then click links for Equipment (or Gallery for photos),
and choose GB3CMS

regards, from Murray Niman G6JYB

(Thanks Murray ..if you check the beacon list now you'll see it's been corrected)

GB3SC~ Beacon Progress update

From: Andy Talbot [G4JNT@THERSGB.NET]
Sent: 12 September 2003

On Friday Sept 12 , GB3SCS on Bell Hill, Loc IO80UU58, was returned to service. The multiplier drift problems with temperature appear to have been solved by changing the L/C ratio on one of the intermediate filter stages to give a lower Q, wider bandwidth design. Its frequency, when I measured it this afternoon, was 2320.902MHz +/- 1kHz.

The 24GHz beacon GB3SCK has now been taken off air for retuning to 24048.900MHz, by Chris G8BKE. Hopefully this will be a straightforward task.

GB3SCX is still undergoing its major rebuild. I am looking at the best way to achieve a high stability phase locked performance without trying to lock an overtone crystal oscillator. This is undesirable as it results in an inherent low loop bandwidth and so gives potential for frequency wandering around its nominal freqeuncy - not something that is desirable for a narrow band beacon designed for SSB reception!
Metalwork is being constructed to allow reliable heatsinking of the new PA in the head unit, which dissipates over 20 Watts, in all weather conditions. Since the head unit can be exposed to outside temperatures of 38 deg with the sun shining directly on it (if the weather of August is repeated) we need to make a good job here.

No decision has been taken on whether the 45s ON / 45s OFF switching cycle of GB3SCC on 5.76GHz can be changed. During the winter period it could probably be raised to a higher duty cycle, but with no spare PA to repair the head unit if it does go pop, I'm reluctant to do so. All offers of 5.76GHz PA modules gratefully received! As I can't continuously monitor this beacon from home, accurate frequency measurement is not possible at this stage.

GB3SCF, remains on FSK keying with its callsign-only ident. This beacon is so reliable and just sits there operating, that I feel it is tempting something or other to dive inside and change anything for the sake of it, much as I would like to convert to on-off keying and replace the keyer with one that can be reprogrammed on site, as in all the rest of the beacons. Frequency as measured a couple of days ago was 3400.905MHz +/- 1kHz

All antennas are operating at reduced height as reported last time. The mast will only be wound back up when both the two high frequency beacon rebuilds are completed

And the the sixth beacon on site - G4JNT/P on 70.31MHz with 0.2W EDRP is a useful frequency standard and tuning signal for several locals building transverters for this band. Accuracy is maintained to within a couple of Hz by using a DDS to derive its carrier from a 10MHz ovenned oscillator. Data is transmitted as FSK, derived by reprogramming the DDS for mark and space frequencies, and is currently set at exactly 85Hz shift. The transmitted data consists of beacon shack telemetry, transmitted using 1s dot period slow CW (known as QRSS to the LF community) to indicate AC mains voltage and current, DC battery voltage, shack temperature and the status of two switches. The data is repeated in fast CW followed by callsign and locator ident before returning to slow CW mode.
